“ The longer I live, the more I am certain that the great difference between men—between the feeble and the powerful, the great and the insignificant—is energy, invincible determination—a purpose once fixed, and then—death or victory! That quality will do anything that can be done in this world, and no talents, no circumstances, no opportunities, will make a two-legged creature a man without it.

The Legacy of the Lady Mico Trust
Founded in 1835 by an Act of Parliament in England, the Lady Mico
Charity—led
by Sir Thomas Fowell
Buxton—established what is now the longest-running education charity in the West Indies. Out of
hundreds of institutions founded across the colonies, only one remains: The Mico University
College
in Kingston, Jamaica.
The Trust’s mission is to provide support beyond what the Jamaican government offers, focusing
on
advancing education for young people in the region. In recent decades, its efforts have been
fully
directed toward teacher training and the development of The Mico.
The Buxton family has continuously played a key role in sustaining the Trust. In 2000, the
Trust’s
assets in Jamaica were officially transferred to The Mico Foundation, which now oversees and
manages
all physical assets of the university.
